Earlier this morning, Liverpool FC forward, Diogo Jota, passed away in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, along with his brother, André Silva, a midfielder for FC Penafiel, a team in Liga Portugal 2. The crash is said to have happened at 12:30AM local time, in Zamora.
This comes as a shock to the entire world of football, as Jota and his brother were both 28 and 25 respectively.
This heartbreaking accident comes off the back of some of the brightest moments of Jota’s career and life. At the end of May, he was crowned Premier League champion, and shortly thereafter, lifted the trophy in the Nations League with Portugal. To cap it all off, two weeks ago, married the love of his life, and high school sweetheart, Rute Cardoso. Yet, just as his professional and personal life were reaching new levels, his promising future was tragically cut short. He now leaves behind a legacy that will forever be remembered, specifically by the club that he called home for so many years: Liverpool.
Jota joined the Reds in 2020, after they won the league title, and has been a prominent player for them ever since. He was able to rack up 61 goals and 14 assists. Along with his individual achievements, he was part of four major trophies for the club. One English FA Cup, two EFL Cups, and one Premier League trophy in the 24/25 campaign.
Anfield Assist offers our deepest condolences to the family of Diogo and André, as well as Diogo’s wife, Rute, and their three children. His memory will be immortalized by the no. 20 at Anfield.
Oh, his name is Diogo.
